As he lay in his death bed, he reminisces back to when they first began, and things of all of the obstacles they had to overcome to be together and come upon the love that they shared. I don't think that this person necessarily passed away or left them, but perhaps that they "dimmed up", became unreachable to the person, without any ability to share a life with the person. It's a symbolic song with the 'home' representing the love between a couple but the love is broken. The way that the 'home' is built is the way that the relationship is built but is now forgotten- but still in the minds of those involved. It's also about the fear of letting go of the relationship and the memories that it holds. In the end though, I think the song is about something simple.
